Mt. Elgon Jiggers Campaign

Mt Elgon is a very remote area with an infestation of jiggers in the soil. People walk bare-foot and build their houses using this type of soil, jiggers has continually affected them. The parasite mostly affects the hands and legs and completely destroys the skin. When these people do not wash their feet regularly, the jiggers makes the feet and hands rot and creates a very painful sore.
In worst cases, the jiggers have led to the fingers and toes falling off when when not treated.

Uwezo Uplift Foundation has really tried our best in carrying out a jiggers’ campaign where we wash the feet of those affected and dipping their feet and hands in some treatment liquid which helps the area to dry off and the parasites to fall off. The treatment has helped some of the people who have really taken care of their selves by cleaning their bodies. For the cases that the whole family have been affected, we go to their homes and spray the whole house.
We have continued offering social education to the general public to keep on maintaining a high level of cleanliness in all aspects. Always sweeping their houses and the surrounding environment.
We give out shoes(gumboots) for them to protect their feet. We opt for this kind of shoes so that they can be used in all types of weather.
